The living does not close itself despite being open: it closes itself thanks to being open.

Thermodynamics distinguished open, isolated and closed systems. Cannon, when formulating homeostasis, already described higher organisms as open systems, and Ludwig von Bertalanffy defined them so in principle: they live because they draw matter and energy from their environment (p. 229). From this came a vulgate that seemed to reconcile the second law with life.

To go further he draws on Whitehead, who denied any detached and autonomous existence (pp. 237–238); on Heraclitus and his «living by death, dying by life» (p. 238); on Bataille (p. 239); and on Maruyama, who links the closed object to a reductive worldview (p. 241).

Activo, no abiertoActive, not open

The great divide is not between open and closed, but between active and inactive. A stone preserves itself by isolation. An active being exists only if it exchanges matter and energy with its environment. That is why there are no absolutely closed or absolutely open systems: every openness has its corresponding closure.

An artificial machine seems more open than a bacterium: it receives energy, materials and a program, and delivers products. But at rest it is a thing that lasts without feeding. The bacterium, by contrast, decomposes if it stops feeding. Its openness is not merely functional: it is ontological and existential. Its work, Morin says, is to exist.

Eco-dependent beings have a double identity: their own, and one of belonging to the environment. The whirlpool is part of the river, and the river is part of the whirlpool. The paradox is that autonomy is woven in dependence: the more complex a being, the more dependencies it multiplies and the more strategies it needs to sustain itself.

A dotted membrane lets orange particles in; they turn inside and leave pale. The boundary filters, the interior transforms, and the being endures because the flow passes through it.

Fronteras que unenBoundaries that join

Cotidiano · la velaEveryday · the candle

An unlit candle is a closed system: wax and wick. Once lit, the wax becomes the reservoir of an open system, the flame, and the wick an invariant that gives its shape constancy. The open rests on the closed: the flame does not exist without the candle it consumes.

Biológico · la membranaBiological · the membrane

Every membrane is barrier and passage. Morin says it of the boundary: it is «the filter that at once holds back and lets through». The cell distinguishes itself from its medium by its membrane and, through that same membrane, feeds on it. Without a boundary it would dissolve; without exchange, it would die.

We tend to think of borders as lines of exclusion. Morin recalls that the border of nations, like the living membrane, is also a place of communication and exchange. A fully closed border suffocates; a fully open one dissolves. That is why the border is at once distinction and belonging.

…de ahí la idea alfa de todo pensamiento ecologizado: la independencia de un ser vivo necesita su dependencia respecto de su entorno.…hence the alpha idea of all ecologized thinking: the independence of a living being requires its dependence on its environment.
Edgar Morin · El Método 1, p. 236Edgar Morin · Method 1, p. 236 (free translation)

Morin closes the section on the ecological relation with this formula, after showing that the environment is not only co-present but co-organizing. It is the central paradox of openness: open beings build their existence, autonomy and individuality only in and through their dependence on the environment.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

If to exist is to depend, autonomy is never secured. Morin says it without consolation: existence is fragility, the open system is close to ruin from birth, and every existence feeds on what corrodes it. What sustains us is also what exposes us, and there is no way to separate one from the other.

Openness also reaches ideas: Morin asks us to open all concepts, including those about concepts. It is an uncomfortable demand for the disciplines, which define themselves by their borders, and for anyone who prefers an identity defined by opposition and exclusion, without the environment inside.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

La frontera entre organismo y entorno es más porosa de lo que suponía la imagen del individuo cerrado sobre sí.Current biology confirms the idea of dependent autonomy: microbiome research shows that functions such as digestion and immunity depend on bacteria that live within us. The boundary between organism and environment is more porous than the image of the self-enclosed individual assumed.

In debates on migration, trade or pandemics, closed borders and open borders are often set against each other. Reading Morin offers another path: thinking of the border as a filter that distinguishes and joins, and asking which closures make possible an openness that does not dissolve what opens.
