A whirlpool is not a thing: it is a process that, as it turns, produces what produces it.
Morin propone regenerarla: el bucle no procede de la información, la precede genealógicamente (p. 215).The idea of the feedback loop was born in Wiener's cybernetics, when a computer and a radar were coupled to guide an anti-aircraft shell (p. 212). With automatic regulation it was reduced to correcting deviations, and the very idea of the loop was nearly drowned. Morin proposes to regenerate it: the loop does not come from information, it genealogically precedes it (p. 215).
Suma la homeostasis de Cannon y Claude Bernard (pp. 224–225), la reorganización permanente de Henri Atlan (p. 227) y la retroacción positiva que Maruyama rehabilitó (p. 253).The decisive step comes from Heinz von Foerster, who placed recursion at the heart of living self-organization; Morin extends it to whirlpools and stars (p. 217). He adds Cannon's and Claude Bernard's homeostasis (pp. 224–225), Henri Atlan's permanent reorganization (p. 227) and the positive feedback that Maruyama rehabilitated (p. 253).
The two movements combine into a loop that acts, as a whole, on each of its parts. That loop is at once a genesic form (it brings it into being), a generic form (it gives it its type) and a generative form (it regenerates it at every moment).
Feedback means the effect acts back on the cause. Recursion is more: the final products of the process produce its initial states. Hence self-production. That is why the steady state is paradoxical: «Change ensures constancy. Constancy ensures change». The whirlpool lasts because the water never stops passing through it.
It is not a substance shut in on itself but an active closure that needs the flow and the environment. The whirlpool has a fragile self; suns have fullness of being and of self; in life the self becomes auto, and in human beings, I.
The whirlwind keeps its shape while particles enter, turn and leave: what endures is not the matter but the loop that organizes it.
Bucles que se rehacenLoops that remake themselves
Cotidiano · el termostatoEveryday · the thermostat
Morin analyses central heating with a thermostat: by measuring the room's temperature and restarting the boiler, it creates a loop between fuel, boiler and room. A new whole appears. But that loop only regulates operation; it does not generate the boiler or the thermostat. In the Sun, by contrast, what heats and what is heated are the same.
Your organism lives in uninterrupted haemorrhage: its molecules degrade and its cells are replaced without pause. The artificial machine endures through the solidity of its parts; you, through the replacement of all of them. That is why homeostasis is no add-on: if it fails, the living being falls apart as a machine and as a being.
Positive feedback amplifies a deviation until it overflows, as in the explosion of a star or the panic of a crowd. Morin sees modern societies in an era of demographic, technical and economic mega-growth, and proposes to think of them through a homeorhetic lens: a becoming that is open, creative and self-regulating at once.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es un círculo viciosoIt is not a vicious circle
A purely closed circuit would be perpetual motion, which the second law expels from physis. The loop feeds on a flow. And its recursion «is not cancellation but production»: each turn remakes the system, which returns to the start without ever being exactly the same.
Cybernetics thought of regulation as a device that corrects errors. For Morin regulation comes before information: it is born from the loop itself, as in a star that regulates itself without a thermostat through the play of two opposing forces. It does not perfect existence; it makes it possible.
No es equilibrioIt is not equilibrium
La organización activa, dice, «se confunde con la reorganización».The steady state is not rest. It is an imbalance endlessly compensated, which Morin calls meta-disequilibrium and meta-instability. Disorder is not left outside: permanent reorganization needs it, because all activity wears things down. Active organization, he says, «merges with reorganization».
I therefore define as recursive any process by which an active organization produces the elements and effects necessary for its own generation or existence, a circuit-process in which the final product or effect becomes the first element and the first cause.Edgar Morin · El Método 1, p. 216Edgar Morin · Method 1, p. 216 (free translation)
Morin writes this definition in the chapter «Self-production», right after showing that a living being is a multi-process of loops: blood, air, hormones, nerve impulses. He wants to go beyond cybernetic feedback: recursion is the logical foundation of generativity and of permanent reorganization.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
If the whirlpool already has a self, where does the metaphor end? Attributing being, existence and self to physical phenomena is the chapter's boldest wager. Morin defends it as a theory of being grounded in organization, but to a physicist it may sound like anthropomorphism, and to a philosopher like a loose use of classical concepts.
Morin rehabilitates positive feedback as a creative force: «Dike will be the daughter of Hybris». But that means accepting that novelty is born of crises, ruptures and disorders that also destroy. There is no evolution without the risk of disintegration, and nothing guarantees in advance which of the two outcomes will come.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Systems biology today studies regulatory networks in which genes, proteins and cells produce one another, exactly the kind of circular causality Morin describes. The idea of autopoiesis, which he discusses with Maturana and Varela, remains alive in theoretical biology and in the enactive cognitive sciences.
Climate science speaks of positive feedbacks that amplify warming, such as ice that melts and stops reflecting sunlight. It is Morin's language: deviations that become trends and threaten to overflow the regulations that kept a whole system stable.

The loop feeds on a flow that comes from outside. The next capsule looks at that other face: being open in order to be closed.
