Classical science kept the observer out of the picture; disorder puts him back at the centre of the image of the cosmos.

Cosmic order could only invent that abstract observer; the disorder of thermodynamics and cosmology, by contrast, reveals the concrete observer, with his uncertainty and his limits (pp. 109–110).

Closing the chapter on organization, Morin shows that a system also depends on whoever cuts it out, drawing on Ashby and Barel (pp. 164–171). And in the section on information, the «great relativity» arrives with Brillouin: every measurement costs negentropy and alters what is measured, and Bohr imagines the dog one would have to kill (pp. 396–403).

There is no longer a supreme vantage point from which to contemplate the universe. That absence brings the subjective point of view into every worldview and forces us to ask who we are and where we observe from: beings on a peripheral planet, with a brain built for the local environment and a culture that produces science.

Cosmological theories also receive projections: the dispute between steady state and big bang was overdetermined by the conflict between secular reason and religious belief. And the crisis of cosmic order coincides with the heating up of industrial society: science, society and cosmos enter becoming together.

The system is rooted in physis, but isolating it is an abstraction made by the observer. What you call system, subsystem or ecosystem depends on the framing. That is why Morin calls it a ghost-concept: it has the shape of material beings, yet is immaterial; it is physical at the feet, mental at the head. It pilots only if someone pilots it.

Donde el observador entra en escenaWhere the observer enters the scene

Cotidiano · ¿quién soy yo?Everyday · who am I?

Morin asks who he is and finds many answers: a physical system of trillions of atoms, a biological one of thirty trillion cells, one of hundreds of organs, an element of his family, his city, his profession, his nation. None is false; each depends on the angle from which you look at yourself.

Biológico · la bacteria y el intestinoBiological · the bacterium and the gut

If you study the bacterium Escherichia coli as a living system, the human gut is its nutritive ecosystem. If you study the gut as a system, the bacterium is a more or less parasitic element. And if you look at the whole organism, the gut becomes a subsystem. The reality is the same; the focus changes.

Social · dos militantes ante la televisiónSocial · two activists in front of the television

Two activists from rival parties watch a debate between their leaders. For each, their own leader confirms what is already known and the opponent is redundancy and noise. The bits emitted can be counted, but the information received is almost nil: what each one hears depends on ideology as much as on the message.

Uncertainty deepens with the loss of Sirius, that is, the irremediable loss of the idea that there could exist a supreme vantage point from which at least a demon might have contemplated the universe in its nature and its becoming.
Edgar Morin · El Método 1, p. 110Edgar Morin · Method 1, p. 110 (free translation)

Morin writes it in the section «The observer of the world and the world of the observer», at the end of the first chapter. He has just shown that disorder brings forth uncertainty, and here he goes further: without a supreme vantage point, we must turn back to the hidden observer.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

If the cutting out of a system depends on the observer's interests and culture, how do we tell a good cut from an arbitrary one? Morin answers with a «principle of art»: the skilled butcher who cuts along the joints. The image is suggestive, but it leaves anyone who must decide without a precise rule.

Morin admits that the uncertainty about his own gaze does not close: he does not know whether he projects onto the cosmos the crisis of society or his own insecurity. Asking science to include the subject unsettles anyone who expects from it a firm, impersonal ground.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

Quantum physics still debates the role of measurement, and in the social sciences it is common to ask who defines the problem and from where. When a study declares its position, its biases and its assumptions, it applies, without knowing it, the idea of an observer who is part of what is observed.

Data models and classification algorithms cut reality according to the interests of whoever designs them: what counts as data, what as noise. Morin's question still holds: which part of the system you describe comes from the world, and which part from your way of looking at it?
