Information does not rule over organization: it is born of it, of an order that works against entropy while feeding it.

De dónde viene: del demonio de Maxwell al bitWhere it comes from: from Maxwell's demon to the bit

Morin parte de ahí en la Tercera parte (pp. 329–347), pero agrega lo que faltaba: la organización productora-de-sí.Schrödinger (1945) framed life in terms of the two directions of entropy, and the idea of negentropy took shape. Brillouin solved the paradox of Maxwell's demon by showing that information is paid for in entropy and can be turned into negentropy. Morin starts there in Part Three (pp. 329–347), but adds what was missing: self-producing organization.

Morin discute a von Foerster, a Brillouin y sobre todo a Henri Atlan, quien lo despertó al papel del ruido en la génesis de la información (pp. 340–358).Meanwhile, Shannon defined information in 1948 as a measurable quantity, within the practical setting of the Bell company, and Wiener turned it into program. With Watson and Crick it entered the gene. Morin argues with von Foerster, with Brillouin and above all with Henri Atlan, who awakened him to the role of noise in the genesis of information (pp. 340–358).

Every organization is an island of negentropy, but it only lasts if it regenerates. Morin distinguishes negentropy-as-measure from negentropy-as-process, which belongs to beings that produce themselves: NEG is GEN. And it is tragic: reorganization works toward its own disorganization, and the living being grows old fighting against growing old.

Las insuficiencias del bitThe shortcomings of the bit

Shannon's bit is an achievement: it gives information physical citizenship. But it is blind to meaning, measures only the transmission of signals, reduces the continuous to the digital and is always degenerative: what is received never exceeds what is sent. It does not explain how information is born, nor does it measure organization, life or intelligence.

Information is not there at the start: it is born of non-information, at the end of a long protobiotic period in which chemical loops become communicational organization. It is engram and archive reactivated at each new beginning; it circulates as signal, multiplies and, in human beings, unfolds into culture, the State and the noological sphere.

The line emerges from noise, orders itself into a wave and falls back into noise. That is how information lives: born of disorder, it organizes for a while and decays unless something regenerates it.

Donde el orden se pagaWhere order is paid for

Cotidiano · Isolda y la velaEveryday · Isolde and the sail

Isolde waits for a white sail if Tristan returns, a black one if he has died. For Shannon's theory, when the sail appears there will be one bit, as in any equiprobable alternative. Neither hope nor love fit into the measure: meaning stays outside, in the human relation between sender and receiver.

Biológico · el perro vivo y el perro muertoBiological · the living dog and the dead dog

A living dog is physically improbable: each instant of its metabolism is an extremely rare occurrence. Dead, it returns to physical probability: it decomposes and its elements scatter. Life, Morin says, is the improbability of an improbability, able to create islands of probability in the ocean of disorder.

A film watched as entertainment usually leaves only residual memories. But Morin recounts that a film about little vagabonds, seen at fourteen in an empty hall of the Bellevilloise, turned the course of his dreams toward revolution. Scattered information regenerates when it meets the right negentropic context.

Information can always be transformed into negentropic organization, but only within the sphere of an informationally organized negentropic organization that can, in turn, transform negentropy into information.
Edgar Morin · El Método 1, p. 385Edgar Morin · Method 1, p. 385 (free translation)

It comes in the section «A universe of information», after a tour of the noological sphere. Morin sums up there the unity of the concept: from thermodynamics to poetry, from DNA to dreams, the same physical principle holds, the potential equivalence between negentropy and information, but only within organized beings.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

Morin links information and power: whoever monopolizes generative information relegates everyone else to energetic tasks of execution, leaving them only the signals that tell them what to do, think, hope, dream. He corrects Marx: class power is not enough, one must see the power of the apparatus. The thesis unsettles liberals and Marxists alike.

His critique of the prestige of the genetic code is also uncomfortable. Talk of message, code and program helped biology, but Morin warns that these words leave more in shadow than they illuminate. Many biologists defended them as useful tools; Morin asks us not to be locked inside them and to ask where information comes from.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

We live in a data economy where information is presented as a sovereign resource, almost independent of whoever produces it. Reading Morin dismantles that image: without organization, context and an apparatus able to integrate it, information decays into noise. The information overload discussed today was already foreshadowed in these pages.

Today's biology speaks of regulatory networks, epigenetics and the origin of life as self-organizing chemistry, closer to Morin's protobiotic loops than to the rigid program of the sixties. Without granting him everything, his question still stands: how is information born from what is not yet information?
