Complexity is not complication: it is a principle that joins antagonists in a loop, without erasing the one who observes.
De dónde viene: un universo desencantadoWhere it comes from: a disenchanted universe
Classical physics, Morin says, disenchanted and desolated the universe: it expelled spirits and souls, but also beings, existences and organization, and concentrated all generativity in energy, a case of Whitehead's «misplaced concreteness». In the Conclusion (pp. 411–415) he sets against that atomized universe a regenerated physis, like the one the Presocratics had recognized.
El cierre se apoya en Brillouin y Atlan para unir lo físico y lo psíquico, y en el retorno del observador en Einstein, Bohr y Heisenberg (pp. 403–422).The first epistemological loop (pp. 309–325) converses with Marx and the production of man by man, with Mumford and the megamachine, with Descartes and La Mettrie. The close draws on Brillouin and Atlan to join the physical and the psychical, and on the return of the observer in Einstein, Bohr and Heisenberg (pp. 403–422).
El primer bucleThe first loop
The concept of machine left industrial society, traveled through suns and whirlwinds and came back transformed. In this way physics, biology and anthropo-sociology are articulated without reducing one to another. We are products of physis and physis is an anthropo-social production: Morin sees this not as a vicious circle but as a productive loop.
Physis generalizada y abiertaGeneralized and open physis
Regenerated physis includes life and human beings: we are physical in our very being, children of the sun, sapiens and demens like the cosmos. But at the moment it encompasses everything, a breach opens: the observer. When the science of man becomes physics, physics becomes a science of man.
The complicated can be reduced to simple rules; the complex cannot. Complexity is at the base and requires associating antagonists: order and disorder, subject and object, one and many. Morin does not reject analysis: he integrates it into a circuit between isolating and joining. The alternative is no longer matter or spirit, but complexity or simplification.
A spiral starts at the center and crosses the three rings, physis, life and society, without settling in any. It is the first turn of the method: coming back to the starting point, but changed.
Donde se ve la complejidadWhere complexity shows
Cotidiano · la madejaEveryday · the tangled skein
A tangled skein looks complicated, but with patient pulling it comes down to a single thread; so does a sailor's knot. Morin uses the image to separate complication from complexity: if the world were merely complicated, reductions to particles, atoms or genetic bases would suffice. The complex does not untangle that way.
Físico · hijos del solPhysical · children of the sun
Morin invites us to read life as something deeply solar: for him, its constituents come from the sun, and its energy from the radiation that feeds plants. That is why he writes that we are «a small appendage of the sun» which, after a soaking in the sea and a few electric discharges, came to life.
Every advance in the manipulation of energy, Morin says, corresponds to a regression of being and existence: «horsepower drives out the horse that leaves dung». The abstract measure of energy made industrial power possible, but left concrete beings out. It is the social face of the atomized universe.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es holismoIt is not holism
Morin does not replace the parts with a whole that explains everything. The loop sustains a knowledge that is neither atomistic nor holistic: analysis keeps returning, synthesis calls it and it calls synthesis. Nor must the loop become a master word: it is a mediation, an invitation to generative thinking.
No es sociologismoIt is not sociologism
Saying that physics is also an anthropo-social praxis does not mean it is mere ideology. Morin refuses to swap the old physicalism for a weak vulgate that dismisses verifiable ideas as products of capitalism. One does not move from one simplification to another: what is needed is a double entry and a double focus.
No es un método terminadoIt is not a finished method
Closing the volume, Morin says he is only at the preliminaries. The method began as an anti-method: curiosity, passion, openness, resistance to key words. It even had to move beyond the systemism, cybernetics and informationism that had once freed it. What it has are guiding ideas, not a recipe book.
From here on, we see that the nature of what distances us from Nature is a development of Nature and brings us closer to the innermost core of the Nature of Nature. The Nature of Nature is in our nature.Edgar Morin · El Método 1, p. 421Edgar Morin · Method 1, p. 421 (free translation)
It closes the section «The physical nature of man», in the volume's Conclusion. Morin has just shown that human history, with its disorder and excess, repeats features of cosmogenesis. So he concludes that Nature is not only physis: it is what binds the anthropological to the biological and the physical.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin claims that all simplifying knowledge is mutilating and ends in manipulation, and calls simplifying thought «the barbarism of science». It is a strong charge against the most successful science there is. For many scientists, simplifying is a legitimate tool; Morin accepts it only as a relative principle, never as an absolute one.
The project requires every concept to have a physical, biological and anthropo-social entry, and the observer to analyze himself. Morin admits he has set himself an impossible mission and does not yet see how to analyze himself. The ambition is admirable, but it leaves the reader with more open questions than closed answers.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
The word complexity is fashionable in management, public policy and technology, often as a synonym for complicated or for a lot. Morin offers a criterion to tell them apart: the complicated can be reduced; the complex requires holding opposites together, including the observer and accepting uncertainty. Using the word is not enough to think in complexity.
Faced with the ecological crisis, the idea that we are part of physis and not its masters no longer sounds poetic but urgent. Morin imagines a science open to cosmic solidarity and an action that does not order but organizes; does not manipulate but communicates; does not direct but enlivens.
