Order does not rule over disorder: they are born together, need each other and fight each other, and everything organized comes out of that wrestling match.
De dónde viene: tres invasiones del desordenWhere it comes from: three invasions of disorder
The first crack came with the second law of thermodynamics, sketched by Carnot and formulated by Clausius in 1850. Then Boltzmann (1877) showed that entropy is molecular disorder and that disorder is the most probable state (pp. 49–52).
In 1900 Planck's quantum opened a second breach in microphysics. Hubble and the background radiation brought the third: a universe in dispersion. Morin finds the decisive turn in Prigogine, von Neumann, von Foerster and Henri Atlan, who show that disorder can also organize (pp. 55–60).
First disorder was degradation: energy turns into heat and the order of a closed system comes undone. Then it proved constitutional: the particle, between wave and corpuscle, has no fixed identity. Finally it showed itself as genesic: the cosmos is born from a dispersion. The same concept went from waste to the very fabric of the real.
If disorder is what is probable, what needs explaining is order. The laws of Nature stop being eternal: they arise from the singular conditions of our universe and hold under certain conditions. The encounter is random, the effect is necessary. Order becomes plural, provincial and fragile.
Order and disorder are not opposed in a simple way. Their relation is at once one (they share the same origin), complementary (everything physical needs disorder to organize itself), concurrent (they run at the same time) and antagonistic (each destroys the other). Morin calls dialogic this unity of two logics that feed and fight each other.
An agitated swarm that at moments knots into a ring and then comes undone: order appears within disorder, not outside it.
Donde el desorden trabajaWhere disorder works
Cotidiano · perfumes y huevosEveryday · perfumes and eggs
Perfumes evaporate and never gather again; scrambled eggs never regain their shape. That is the degradation of the second law. But, as Morin notes, perfumers make new perfumes and hens lay new eggs: dispersion goes on while the wheel rebuilds and organizes.
If you heat a layer of liquid from below, at first heat passes by conduction. Beyond a threshold, regular hexagonal convection cells appear. Morin takes the example from Prigogine: instability and heat flow, which are forms of disorder, spontaneously produce an organized form.
Social · la palabra revoluciónSocial · the word revolution
For centuries, revolution, said of the stars, meant flawless repetition. After 1789 it came to mean rupture and change. Morin shows how, as society, life and the universe stopped being fixed, the idea of order readjusted itself, until disorder forced it to change.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es un nuevo reyIt is not a new king
Dethroning order does not mean enthroning disorder. Morin argues with Michel Serres, who puts disorder first: he prefers to remove the hierarchy altogether. He warns that disorder cannot be isolated to become the new absolute Principle of the Universe, because it exists only in relation.
No es solo dialécticaIt is not just dialectics
Morin does not use dialogic to discard dialectics but to derive it from it. The dialectic of order and disorder plays out among phenomena; the dialogic touches the principle, the way of thinking that lets two opposed logics coexist without one absorbing the other.
No es puro azarIt is not mere chance
Disorder comes in many forms. Chance names an observer's inability to predict; the event, what is singular and unexpected; the accident, the disturbance caused by an encounter. They are not all alike: some disorders generate and others degenerate, and almost all do both.
So the first appearance of disorder (thermodynamic) brought us death. The second (microphysical) brought us being. The third (genesic) brings us creation. The fourth (theoretical) joins death, being, creation and organization.Edgar Morin · El Método 1, p. 60Edgar Morin · Method 1, p. 60 (free translation)
With this summary Morin closes «The invasion of disorders», the first section of the chapter on order and disorder. He has just introduced Prigogine, von Foerster and Atlan, and he sums up the journey of disorder before trying to understand how the cosmos organizes itself.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin carries entropy far beyond thermodynamics, turning it into a universal tendency toward disorganization. He himself admits that, without a theory of organization, the idea remains as if suspended in mid-air. A physicist may see this as too broad a use of a precise concept.
The underlying question stays open: is disorder part of the world's order, or is order part of its disorder? Morin does not settle it and proposes holding both opposite readings. For anyone who wants an answer, this deliberate uncertainty can look like an evasion.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Prigogine received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1977 for his dissipative structures, the same year this book came out. Today self-organization far from equilibrium is studied in chemistry, biology and materials physics: from reactions that form patterns to tissues that order themselves.
Morin insists that every local order is paid for with disorder in the surroundings. The idea weighs on today's energy debates: a city, a factory or a data center keeps its organization by dissipating heat and waste outward, and sooner or later that bill comes due.
